RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Parkinson’s Center is currently under construction on the MCV Campus.

VCU Chair of Neurology, James Bennett, Ph.D., is the founding director of the center. He says the center will focus on the disease rather than treating the patients with the disease.

“What we’re really about is understanding the disease,” said Bennett. “Applying laboratory science and clinical science to figure out how to stop the disease from getting worse.”

The center is close to reaching it’s initial fund-raising goal of $10 million, with $9.2 already raised.

Bennett is currently working out a laboratory in the medical building. He said he’s eager for the building’s completion, but hopes the center never stops expanding.

“I hope the center is never fully completed. What I mean by that is that I hope we keep adding to the center.”

Bennett said the center should be up and running by the end of the 2010-11 academic year.
