RICHMOND, Va. — VCU Medical Center, the only level one trauma center in Central Virginia, will keep improving its facilities after receiving $40 million for renovations. The Center’s Emergency Department unveiled phase one of the renovation with a new advanced trauma resuscitation center.

At an open house hosted by MCV on Sept. 13, first responders got a first look at the new center. The center took eight months to construct and is 4,000 square feet, about the size of VCU’s basketball court.

Dr. Joseph Ornato, Chair of Emergency Medicine, said the center “gives us an amazing capability in terms of expanding the number of patients who are critically ill or critically injured that we can take care of at one time.”

The trauma center officially opened on October 1. Additional renovations will include new treatment areas.
