RICHMOND, Va. — After a public outcry and months of controversy, Church Hill’s Captain Buzzy’s Beanery was denied an appeal for extended hours and to serve beer and wine in the neighborhood coffee shop.

The Church Hill Association sponsored an ad bashing Buzzy’s appeal, but owner Bob Buffington defended the measure to Richmond’s City Council. “My coffee shop has often been referred to as a major contributor to the success of the neighborhood,” Buffington said of the coffee shop, which has served the Church Hill neighborhood for 10 years.

Few opposed the council’s decision on Twitter, but now neighborhood patrons are uncertain of Buzzy’s future. Brittney McBean, who had her first date with her husband at Captain Buzzy’s, is worried that the coffee shop will be hurt financially since they weren’t granted extended hours.

“If they don’t have those extra hours, the extra revenue… they might not be able to stay open. I think it’s a real shame and it will be a big loss to the Church Hill community,” McBean said.
