RICHMOND, Va. – This season the men’s soccer team has one of the toughest schedules in the country, including matches against eight teams ranked in the preseason top 25. So far, the team has 8 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws, and is ranked its highest since 2004.

Head Coach Dave Giffard said he looks forward to the tough schedule. “We’ve been building each year to try to build and create a program that year end and year out can be among the best programs in the country. In order to do that, we have to play against the very best teams that we can,” Giffard said.

Although the Rams lost three straight games early in the season, they responded with a six game winning streak. One of these wins was against the Indiana Hoosiers, the defending national champion.

The team is now gaining national recognition. “Everyone in the country knows who VCU soccer is in the college soccer circles. We’re not the favorite yet. But I can tell you this, I don’t think there are too many teams that want to see our name pop up on their NCAA screen that that’s their opponent or that we’re coming through them,” Giffard said.

Giffard and the team will be playing in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament from Nov. 14 to the 17 in Dayton, OH. The winner will receive an automatic invite to the NCAA Tournament.
