VCU InSight for April 1, 2016

A new approach to combating what police are calling a heroin epidemic in Chesterfield County; one of our students recently traveled to Belize and reports on Zika virus in this impoverished country; a VCU Police officer was in the right place at the right time to save a life; fitness trackers are providing important health information to users and doctors; and kKids with autism are riding horses for fun and therapy. See in-studio interviews with VCU graduate student Jennifer Gerlach, leader of this weekend’s “Out of the Darkness” Walk for suicide prevention on the VCU campus; and area muralist and artist Sir James Thornhill.

East End Cemetery vandalized

Four gravestones were knocked over and broken in historic East End Cemetery. The gravestones were discovered by volunteers who have been cleaning up overgrowth on the 14 acre property. This is the first known incident of vandalism at the cemetery. Emily Akiyama reports.

Annual “Take Back the Night” takes place

VCU’s annual “Take Back the Night,” presented by the Student Wellness Center and the student group S.A.V.E, took place April 25. The night raises awareness about sexual assault through speakers, emotional testimonials and a night march through the streets.

“Sexting” investigation raises concerns of school officials, parents

Louisa County is investigating a sexting ring involving more than 100 students and the social media site Instagram. Instagram removed the explicit photos after being contacted by the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office. Three VCU soccer players face felony charges

Three VCU freshman soccer players have been charged with a felony for filming a nude minor.  The players have been suspended from the team while the school carries out a separate investigation.  At this time a trial date has not been set.
